To find the right Default.j4l file

Apparently, newer operating systems for Windows a tendency to save Personal Notes to a RefWorks folder in a completely different place then the Biblesoft Program Files folder.

  1. Click on the Start Menu.
  2. Note for Win 8/8.1 users – DO NOT go into the Start menu to search for this file. Instead, go to the File Explorer window that can be access by pressing and holding the Windows key and then tap the E key on your keyboard.
  3. In the space that says Search programs and files type in Default.j4l making sure not to hit on the Enter key.
  4. Note for Win 8/8.1 users – First, make sure you are in the C: drive and then type Default.j4l into the Search field in the upper right corner.
  5. Instead, click where it says See more results.
  6. A window will appear, more than likely with the j4l file you have been accessing showing up at the top because you have been accessing a specific place for the file. This file is not the one you are looking for.
  7. Look for something that says Search again in and click on Computer which will be under that.
  8. This will start a new Search for Default.j4l, but be careful to not click on anything that comes up with a magnifying glass next to the file name; this indicates that it is a Search. Also, make sure that you don't click on the file that has Recent in the path; that indicates a file you have already been accessing.
  9. The file you are looking for has a path that starts out like: C:\Users\(computers name)\AppData\
  10. You will want to open any file that starts up this way in its own window. I have seen paths that start out this way, but end in the Recent folder. Because you will more than likely only see the beginning of the path, I recommend opening any file in its own window that has this same beginning.
  11. You can right click and select Open File Location at the bottom of the list that appears and close any windows that does not end in RefWorks\Default.j4l
